What Is an NPC?
An NPC is a non-player character who supports the story and helps create encounters for players, often portraying many different roles throughout the weekend. From terrifying monsters to enigmatic allies, NPCs are the foundation of our immersive world.
What Will I Do as an NPC?
The Aether relies on its NPC team to manifest the mysteries of the Isles. Your roles and tasks may include:
- Playing monsters or enemies in cinematic combat encounters.
- Portraying townsfolk, travelers, merchants, guards, or nobles.
- Helping run major story scenes and atmospheric resets.
- Assisting with props, site cleanup, and immersive setup.
- Supporting plot staff with combat, roleplay, or logistics.
Why NPC?
NPCing is the ultimate gateway to the Isles. It is a fantastic way to try the game risk-free, learn the complex rules through action, and meet our welcoming community. Best of all, you contribute to building the world and experience every twist of the story without the need for a full player character or event ticket cost.
Cost and Food
Joining the NPC team is completely free. NPCs do not pay the standard event registration fee. Furthermore, for our full immersion weekend events, NPCs receive dedicated food service. While specific menus vary by campsite, we prioritize including all NPCs in our event meal planning.
What to Bring
- Black or dark neutral base layers for costuming.
- Comfortable boots or shoes suited for rugged New England terrain.
- Full bedding and pillow for weekend cabin events.
- A reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during combat.
- Toiletries and personal hygiene items.
- Weather-appropriate clothing (nights can be cold on the Isles).
- Any essential medications and preferred personal snacks.
- A full change of dry clothes for after the game.
- Any personal fantasy costume pieces, though these are not required.
How Should I Dress?
Start with simple black or dark clothing as your foundation layer. Depending on your assigned role, the game staff will provide masks, tabards, monster gear, tailored costuming, props, or professional makeup. You are always welcome to bring your own Egyptian-inspired fantasy costuming, but be prepared to shift roles as the story demands.
Do I Have to Fight?
Combat is a core part of the game but it is not a requirement for NPCs. While some roles specifically need combat prowess, many others focus on roleplay intensity, logistics, tavern service, makeup, or plot support. Simply alert our staff to your comfort levels, physical boundaries, or accessibility needs so we can build the best experience for you.
What We Expect From NPCs
We value the dedication of our NPC team. To ensure a safe and magical event, we ask that you:
- Strictly follow all safety protocols and staff directions.
- Be respectful and welcoming to all players and volunteers.
- Commit to creating impactful scenes for the player community.
- Keep story secrets and plot spoilers private.
- Remain flexible as the needs of the narrative shift.
- Communicate openly if you need a break or physical adjustment.
- Honor the shared story as the primary goal of your role.
